Concept
This is namely the direction
and the main idea of our project – to present “Dubai – the star” with the whole of its charm,
uniqueness and boldness which is close to craziness. The star – as a symbol of
explorers and sailors, carrier of the new passionate and unique spirit of the
city.
During the creation of the
concept, the team underwent through a number of discussions concerning the
meaning of a symbol-building. We went to the conclusion that it should contain
identity and uniqueness which would generate symbolism. Symbol-building is
closely related to the history of a place, it is a reference to the past and a
bridge to the future – it is the EiffelTower for Paris,
the Pyramids in Giza, the BrooklynBridge for New York. It is all that unites the
quintessence of a city in one form which is unchangeable in time.
Shape
In our research for the form,
the place and its position, we gradually reached the idea of a geometric shape
based on the pentagon, which later on grew to star – that was the base.
Step by step the form evolved
and the geometry made way to construction. The idea was clear – namely to
recreate the star as a form which represents modern Dubai and to add to its glory and uniqueness
in a search of symbolism in the Arabic history.
The form is strong and
balanced – we tried to impress the visitor by a clear and strong statement. The
five rays, standing on the ground over the concrete blocks, strengthen the
feeling of centripetal force and enlarge its importance. The vertical tower ray
starts form the geometric centre between the five ground touching rays and
raises highly and boldly bending over others. In its very end, 130 m from the
ground, there is a horizontal panorama terrace with 360 degrees view of the
city. A maximum effect is seeked through pure forms, symmetry and geometric
construction.

Programme
and Functionality
We tried to stick closely to
the program of the competition.
An underground secured parking
with 30 lots is provided and serves the needs of the building employees only. In the basement there are service rooms
for the air-conditioning and electrical installations, as well as spaces of
service for the café on the ground floor. The access is being made through a separate staircase.
In the ground base, in the
geometric centre under the five rays all the functions of a “symbol-building”
are gathered such as cafeteria, children’s library and service rooms. The
overall area of the ground floor is 710 sq. m. This is where the conference
hall for one hundred people is placed and it has the option to be transformed
into three smaller halls. Maximum accessibility for disabled people is provided
throughout the building. Two elevators are “fired” from the bending nucleus,
each with a capacity for 8 people. An alternative emergency exit is provided
with a staircase also placed in the nucleus. On the second floor there is a
cafeteria with panoramic view of the park lake. The space of the “stage” is
open and practically free of function, the roof of the whole “nucleus” is
transparent and allows the natural flow of light into inner spaces. The panorama
terrace is well secured.
Areas: basement - 1800 м2, ground floor–710м2, second floor (cafe) – 130м2 andpanorama terrace - 90 м2.
The height of the whole construction
reaches 167 m, and the panorama terrace itself is some 130 m from the ground.
Construction
The construction is made of steel ropes, metal
elements and element placed in a geometric order, a reference to the Arabic
geometry and logic between the elements. In the transparent regions of each ray
floodlights are placed, “tearing” Dubai
by night and adding extra monumentality of the “symbol-building”.
Environment
The surrounding Zaabel park is not changed, only
alleys are created in order to lead the visitors to the entry. The space in
front of the main entry and foyer is turned into square. The pavement stresses
on the symbol again – a star that lies in the history of Arabic culture. Its
detailed shaping is subordinated to a geometric order.
Our concept was clear from the
very beginning – it was a search of a way to find path for the star idea, using
other geometric forms. Each city has its star. Dubai has already found its own.
