The Hord Coplan Macht design team was selected to masterplan a 25 acre site and design the new school in the Candelas neighborhood. The school was to be K-8, approximately 100,000 square feet in size. It was to be designed to be able to expand to a future 120,000 square feet. The 25 acre site was evaluated to locate the new school. Three areas of the site were vetted for this first phase of construction. The northwest portion of the site was identified as the best location for the school and the first phase of construction. This site location locates the school closest to the community as well as other amenities, including a new recreation center. This location also maximizes the amount of remaining site for future development, giving the School District the most flexibility for future programs and buildings. The floor plan of the school is organized around three academic wings that branch off of a main north to south circulation zone. Building upon the design concept, each of the academic wings represent one of the three water sheds and the main north to south is the ‘Platte River’ that these water sheds ultimately feed. Off of the main circulation are all of the shared amenities and classrooms, anchored on the north by the Learning Commons (Library) and by the Commons (Cafeteria) to the south.
