This project began as a small addition to a historic house for a couple and their teenage son and evolved into a full fledged historic renovation and new construction addition to an 1865 National Trust structure. With an extensive program for both the new and existing structures, we needed a way to seperate old from new in a subtle fashion. We created an inset seam between the existing structure and new addition that would serve as a demarcating line, letting the inhabitants understand the relationship of the two buildings when passing through this space. On the exterior, the geometric forms and opening rthythms were kept very much in line with the historic fabric of the existing home. On the interior, the modern aesthetic of the new addition was carried over to the renovation of theexisting building with the lack of ornament to wall and ceiling treatments and organization of spaces as they relate to the new program of the addition. We recently completed the second phase of the project which includes a garage, pool house and swimming pool as well. These elements speak to both the existing home and the addition as they create a courtyard for the pool and subsequent gardens
