The Therapeutic Garden at Expocenter of Ukraine is an inclusive public space designed for recovery, emotional relief, and social connection for veterans, their families and general public.
Developed by Big City Lab urban bureau in partnership with PUPA architectural bureau, this pilot project implements an evidence-based approach to environmental therapy. The Therapeutic Garden engages visitors through the five senses. Its core concept focuses on health restoration through movement in direct contact with nature. To achieve this, the space features a therapeutic gardening zone, an adaptive sports court, an area for body-oriented practices, the 'Circle of Warmth' — a green room for group therapy centered around a fire pit, and a playground for children whose parents are participating in the programs.
The project is being implemented by the National Complex ‘Expocenter of Ukraine’ together with the Ministry of Veterans Affairs as part of the National Strategy for creating a barrier-free space in Ukraine at the initiative of the First Lady Olena Zelenska. Reflecting the principles of barrier-free and inclusive design, the garden prioritizes universal access through non-slip surfaces, ergonomic seating, and tactile navigation with Braille.
