oldtheater
inWinschotenisdemolishedto make roomfor the newKulturhus. It opensits doorsin four years. In orderto fillthis period, KAW restructured an old tramcoachhouseatRenselkadeas a temporarytheater.Afterthe opening of theKulturhusthe old coachhaus willfunction as atheater workshopfor amateursand(youth) theater education.Thus, theold tramcoachhouseboosted therevitalizationof the harbour.The entire process,from initial ideato
completion, lasted elevenmonths.Inthese elevenmonths,witha limited
budget (European funding) the pilot turned into atheaterfacilitywithapproximately
350locationsThe tramcoachhouse
is abeautifulindustrialbuilding from theearly
20th, but it was inmoderate condition. The basefor the designwas
to strengthenthe character
ofthe building.
KAW improved the contruction and functionality of the building. On the outsidethebrickwallsareleft intact.
Theasbestosroof anddecrepitcorniceshave been replaced byinsulatedroof panelsand acontrasting whitecornice. Theredevelopmentof the theater isthe first development inthe revitalization oftheRenselkade area. The
interest inthe theater for
amateursis huge.Therefore the secondpilot ofthe tramcoachhouse
isalsorezonedastheater. Next to the tram coachhouse you’ll find
thePhaff, anoldfactory and culturalmonument. Here other cultural functions
can be placed.KAW requested
for funding to restorate the factory. In the end the Renselkade area will be a superb expansion of the centre of Winschoten. The industrial buildings and the harbour indicate the area. The old tram coachhouse will be the cultural centre.
