The project began with an interest in observing how light from multiple
perspectives can distort the perception of an object. I set up an
animated trajectory of the sun over a three dimensional object and
froze that trajectory at equal increments 48 times from sunrise to
sunset. An extrusion of this mapping diagram became the systemic
structure that defined the program. The program is a
multi-theater space for live music. The building consists of three
theaters, one in the basement, one on the second level and one on the
roof penetrating into the third level. The first level is reserved for
the main entrance and lobby. Access into the building is available from
beneath the Highline and from the Highline into the second floor
theater. The building consists of 96 plan extrusions of pre-cast
concrete stacked and post tensioned. These extrusions compensate for
vertical circulation, interior walls, and theater seating.Direct
sunlight penetrates the building at four main points, illuminating
vertical circulation. A light shaft pierces the skin on the north,
south, and east sides. Another light well penetrates the roof,
directing light deep into the building.
