Theater Colon Project
The Theater Colon located next to the San Martin Square in downtown Lima. San Martin square is one of the most representative public spaces of the city. It is located at the ninth block of Colmena Avenue, within the Historic Centre of Lima which was declared a World Heritage Site in 1988 by UNESCO. It is located near the Plaza Mayor of Lima and is connected to it by the Jiron de la Union. Its central monument gives homage to Peru's liberator, José de San Martin
Colon Theater was opened in 1929 as a very luxurious local theater. During the 50’s it became a movie theater, and in the 80's fell into decay turning into a movie theater until it was closed in 2003
In 2006 under a new administration we started the project to begin the conservation of the building and the transformation to accommodate new events. The idea was to transform the Theater in a Cultural Landmark for downtown Lima, with different events (concerts, theater plays, restaurant, etc).
The project strategy undertakes the entire restoration process and transformation of some areas of the building to create a Restaurant, Lounge Bar and all the services necessary to provide a better used of the theater.
To provide a flexible Arena, that could change from traditional seats to a platform. This will allow different kinds of shows and events. The Colon facilitates an appropriated spatial theatricality for the entire spectacle.
Another important part of the project was the NewServicesBuilding, located in a lot next to the theater. The building will provide all the necessary space for rehearsal studios, backstage storage and other services that improve the current Theater.
