City Stage of Light
This project locates near the Yuen River bank in Changde, with site area of 1600 sqm (4-Storey, 2,500 sqm building area). Our vision for this cultural venue is to encourage art interactions and engagement with the general public, the simplicity and scale of You Art Centre welcomes Changde citizens from all background and age to visit. The new place does not only house exhibition and showcase of art, it also encourage aesthetic education and cultural exchange through its publicness, openness, and its multi-functionality. The signature character of contemporary art is diversity, You Art Centre itself is versatile enough to carry these possibilities. We foresaw the future of museums will not only be displaying the success of traditional arts and artists, it should be an agora for conversations and discussions, the interconnected 'Public Void' atriums we built is exactly where creativity would take place.
Public Platform for Art Cultivation
You Art Centre takes “City Stage of Light” as the theme of design concept, using architectural space as the medium,we aspire to create stage/platform for cultivation of art and spiritual lifestyle. The proximity of the site to Yuen River inspires the facade design. The porous metal skin reflects light and brings different character of natural light into the interior. The faceted metal component shimmers when people looks at it from different angles on the street, resembling the glittering ripples on the water surfaces and vernicular roof shingles building technology, creating a subtle but poetic sensation for the spectators.
Public Void as Informal Public Space
The design at first glance is a simple cube. Inside the envelope, a few more boxes of various sizes house different
functions, e.g. performance theatre, library and conferencing. The organic composition of boxes creates
interconnected 'Public Void' atriums - a series of interesting negative space used as open plan exhibition, public
lecture and sky gardens. The project is small in scale to fit such a diverse and interactive programmes, the designers arrived at a solution during design process - to expand the space for circulation, so that they are flexible enough to accommodate other open plan functions.
Towards Green Building Design
You Art Center has integrated passive strategies in space and facade to achieve better daylight and thermal performance.Space and Light is a fundamental element in our design, and the control of natural light is a crucial
strategy to achieve the spatial effect. The skylight at main atrium brings in soft daylight, reducing the reliance on
artificial lighting and the fact that it is north facing also balanced the need for air-conditioning. The modular aluminum panels are installed as the second skin of the building not just for aesthetic appeal but also performs as a thermal buffer to achieve better energy efficiency .
