Unlike conventional campus fitness facilities that focus on exercise alone, Sacramento State’s 151,000 square foot Recreation and Wellness Center is the heart of student life, uniting fitness, medical care, and social activity spaces under one roof. The Center provides whole-health care for 28,000 students and 3,400 faculty and staff through a broad spectrum of amenities and services: a rock climbing wall, 4 basketball courts, a large multi-activity court for sports like indoor hockey or soccer, studios for cardio, weight training, and an array of exercise classes, a pharmacy, a lab, as well as health offices for physical therapy, nutrition, optometry, and mental health.
The Center achieved LEED Gold certification from the United States Green Building Council and reflects good design decisions such as orientation to natural light, as well as the incorporation of low-energy materials and technology including recycled content finishes, self-shading skylights, and site cast exterior panels. Hornberger + Worstell is honored to have collaborated with Associate Architect Ellerbe Becket, An AECOM Company in the making of the project.
The WELL (Wellness, Education, Leisure, Lifestyle) has developed some outstanding and impressive metrics, both in sustainability and mission (Lifetime wellness through collaboration, education, innovation). On any given day 3,000 students pass through the turnstiles. Over 21,000 of the 28,000 students on campus are members, supporting over 40 programs and 150 “Rec” league teams.
