Beautifully lodged next to the popular ski resort of the famous Forest of the Cedars of God and overlooking the Kadisha Valley – which is part of the World Heritage Site, this restful getaway offers breathtaking views and sunset-streaked skies.
Built on a steep terrain, this well-structured residence contrasts with ordinary flat lots. Unlike horizontal typography, where every structure lies at the same elevation, a slope allows for the rooflines of houses to stagger down the site, providing more expansive, uninterrupted viewpoints. But while a steep site comes with the advantage of panoramic vistas, it also presents challenges to architects. This is also the case here.
The rectangular shaped garden stretches in length to allow a longitudinal layout. The challenge was to organize the created outdoor areas in a linear composition all oriented towards the spectacular view thus to allow a better circulation.
Each level unfolds a particular activity. The outdoor area close to the house emphasizes the dynamic interaction between the indoor and the outdoor spaces, which serves as a continuity as well. Swooping to the next level, an open space unveils a buffer zone where communing with the nature becomes so easy. This brings us to the sitting area comprised within a beautiful pergola. An outdoor fireplace niched in its center propagates warmth, serenity while promises long nights filled with laughter and gatherings. You might then want to take a sneak peak at what lies behind those walls of stones. Three little steps will take you to the final level, the forest of cedars. Take a stroll between those majestic cedar trees while gazing at the surrounding forest of perennial cedars. The intentional link of continuity created here crafts an incomparable message of interconnectedness.
The wanderer thus becomes a player challenged to explore and surpass all levels thus to reach the final prize.
This beautiful garden will lull you in a state of tranquility. Well defined and structured, every element is skillfully positioned and revealed behind those defining basalt frames. Sited at the starting point of the garden, the portico serves not only as decorative element but several key roles. Its’ essential one being the floating balustrade which although is inexistent, a sense of safety accompanies you while walking down those stairs.
By framing the view, a linking element was created between the garden and the stairs. The overall effect is a circular circulation of the various existing levels. These framed windows unveil two niches with their floating gargoyles. This doorway creates and captures vistas.
Amidst the hard conditions of a moist summer season and snowy winter as the residence is located at an altitude of 2,000 m above the sea level, the choice of native plant was very challenging. The softscape is clearly chosen to contrast with the hardscape in form and in color. The small shrubbery is cut into spheres, highlighting the cutting linearity of the basalt slabs. The plant material is native, implying its adaptability to the harsh and changing climate conditions and its requiring less maintenance and irrigation compared to other species.
Take a few steps down and awaken your senses…. A murmuring gargoyle, a pop of colors, a flowery scent, the dance of leaves and their silk touch.
Here you’ll be secluded but stimulated too!
