This greenhouse is designed as an infill of a second-floor rooftop on an existing New York City public school. The school’s burgeoning garden program currently grows in a plot cut into a playground, and is beset by pollution, pests, trash, and vandalism. The school’s curriculum includes the growth, preparation, eating, and selling of food grown on site. The new facility is small but cultivation-intensive, with two levels and hydroponic growing apparatus. The greenhouse uses LED lighting and low-impact climate control systems to strike a balance between low energy usage goals and the requirements of year-round food cultivation.
