The Vision Ship is a supplementary building for the youth community developed by China Visionary and local government. We are entrusted with the overall renovation of the building, including exterior and interior design. The target demographic group of the project are young “Bei Piao” (refers to young people who left their hometown, and work in Beijing), specifically, to those who are working in the technology industrial park around the community nearby the site. The client hopes that this new canteen can unite young residents together and form a sense of community. We extrapolated the key word Piao (drifting) from the demographic analysis of potential residents, and visualized this word by the concept of ship and beacon, through introducing several façade elements, the foam aluminum panels, a long horizontally expanding overhang, and a series of circular portholes. The building is transformed into a cozy living room and community center in an urban scale, providing sense of security and a temporary harbor for Bei Piao. The interior design also responds to the architectural design concept. The red perforated aluminum dome, in contrast with the silver-gray facades, hangs over the randomly arranged tables and chairs to create a warm community atmosphere. The oblique layout of tables and chairs can trigger occasional communication between residents and further enhance community cohesion. Just like the passengers on a cruise, the residents are a group of young people with different dreams who meet on the sea by fate, and will eventually go their separate path at some point. We hope that this small canteen can become a soft resting place in their life.
