Located in the residential area, the twin villas have a unique vision of the Hoa Xuan River, Da Nang City. Taking advantage of the unique location, the architect creates their own private view of each space while keeping its connection with the nature and landscape around.
From afar, it is apparent that this set of duplex villas of a dual-block structure that leans onto one another, resulting in a distinctive symmetry effect. The innovative design allows for saving space and optimizing garden areas. It also creates sustainable architecture and a magnificent overall appearance. Yet a closer look reveals that this symmetry is anything but uniform. The alternating shapes and spaces in the asymmetrical design of these villas add a touch of difference and intrigue to the overall. This, in turn, emphasizes the individualization of each villa, resulting in a truly unique and striking contrast between the two.
“Passive design” is the main criterion for building the twin villas. This can greatly reduce building energy requirements by utilizing the “natural” sources of sunlight, wind, heating, cooling, and ventilation to create a comfortable, sustainable, energy-saving living environment.
Always appearing as a unique part of our projects, the façade made of fiber-reinforced concrete has been used as a shading strategy, blocking wind from the west and reducing heat radiation into the villas. The idea of choosing this material both ensures living privacy and delivers a characteristic appearance of the villas. The reflecting shadow light at night turns the house into a huge lantern.
The overall structure is inspired by the surrealism of Salvador Dalí's artworks which exploits opposing concepts. This is shown by the contrast between huge building massing and light constructional elements. In detail, the solid-heavy bare concrete blocks are supported by slender columns structured by super-strength fiber concrete. The combination of the opposing shapes creates a unique appearance and optimizes the functional space; creating a garden area, an airy outdoor space unaffected by the weather. The surrounding landscape around the house reflects the Vietnamese culture. The straight and high bamboo, cane trees interleaved with the slender vertical columns represent the resilience and bravery of the Vietnamese gentleman.
Prioritizing locally available, sustainable, environmentally friendly materials is also an important criterion for building the twin villas. The combination of natural materials such as fiber-reinforced concrete, natural stone, and wood brings a contemporary feel but is still emotional and rustic.
These villas include functional and green spaces connected by the continuous atrium between floors, which creates flexible open spaces. Moreover, transitional spaces are created automatically between functional spaces. Specifically, on the 1st floor, the outdoor dining links between the garden and the dining room, or on the 3rd floor, a public living space connecting the individual bedrooms. We have optimized and combined the atrium and corridor system linking the function rooms to create a spacious space and ensure a continuous connection. Our design aims to encourage interaction and communication among family members. The villa’s architecture is designed so that any area can access the exterior.
The twin villas embody a harmonious blend of modern architecture, sustainable design, and a strong connection with nature. The intention was to design a lively and sophisticated living space with a combination of passive design, creativeness in materials usage, and transitional spaces. By seamlessly blending nature with architecture, these villas offer more than just a comfortable home but a representation of a mindful and philosophical approach to enjoying life.
