This small house is built in the developing residential area of Sapporo, the north of Japan.
A promenade along the small waterway is located in the south of the planned site. The sites level rises about 1,200 mm from the promenade. Beyond the waterway, well maintained park with a hill can be seen, and also Mt. Teine is in a view further beyond.
In such characteristic environment, there are some aspects that are not visible together sectionally because of the height differences, although they are near to each other in a planar level. For example, since the waterway is narrow and deeper down the park and the promenade, we must approach closer to see the surface of the water. In addition, it is almost impossible to see both together, promenade in front and 1,000m high Mt. Teine at far, as a focused clear picture.
By extending the surrounding topography and height differences into the interior, we expected an interior with organic relationship to be created, which has various patterns of connection between outside and inside, and the distance between the family members. The form of this building, which responds to the neighboring mountains or a hill of the park, reduces many roof related problems during the winter in this snowy region.
