Taiwan’s urban context is always very energetic but also with complicated conflictions, for instance, narrow alleys, close building distances, and lack of living privacy etc. Therefore, how to solve these problems by design strategies in this complex urban context is the most important issue of this project.
The site is located at Taipei’s most crowded downtown area, surrounded with buildings and only one side facing the 7M one way accessible road. The site’s condition does not allow an adequate depth for building elevation to face the urban context. So we designed a vertical metal panel system which extended of the building exterior wall, these cantilever panels attracts people when walking pass and look up to the building to experience an unique elevation rhythm. The depth of these vertical panels which also creates a screen or blocking effect from buildings across the street, they can help residents to have much better privacy when using balconies and terrace. When residents looing out from indoor, the extended vertical panels also lead the sight view and combine the indoor and outdoor as one extended area.
The ground floor outdoor foyer creates a setback which is much more friendly to the urban context and a privacy screen for entry circulations. A simple geometric shape hopefully also creates residents sense this “HOME” image.
The surrounded existing buildings are mostly 4-5 stories high, therefore the project is setback at 6 and 9 floors which create huge terrace and offer amazing urban views for the residents, and also hopefully to make people to read TAIPEI this unique city once again .
