It is a dining and activity space transformed from a former sun shed on a farm. The client hopes to adjust the function and business mode on a low budget, making the project a breakthrough for future operations. The main body of the sun shed is the concrete foundation, light steel structure, and sunlight board, which is used to cultivate economic seedlings. After field research, we found that the project itself is relatively isolated. The surrounding environment is unexploited countryside without any unique natural and cultural landscape, so it is not very convenient for visitors. Therefore, the problems we need to solve in the project include how to break through all kinds of restrictive conditions, excavating the potential of the project itself, enhance the value of space, and stimulate the local rural vitality.
The design concept comes from the countryside scenery: the blue sky, boundless fields, buzzing frogs, and fragrant air in the shade of trees. In terms of space model, the design transforms the common middle-axis one-word banquet space into a circular radiation-type banquet space based on a central stage, which forms good centrality and sharing effects.
The selection of materials also reflects the countryside elements. The yew seedlings on the farm are used to form a true tree-lined background, where the oxygen released by the plants enhances the climate conditions. The 12 tree-shaped pillars woven by yellow-brown bamboo hide the original steel structure, thus, weakening its industrial feel. They also act as the abstract form of trees, forming a banquet in the forest. The ground adopts the cement to polish the road surface, with an integrated treatment on green stone ground, the grassland, and the flower field. With reasonable streamlining, the functional spaces are finally non-interfering and clear at a glance.
After entering the operation stage, we were pleasantly surprised to find that the actual demand for social activities far exceeds the design expectations. The space is originally designed to be a banquet space for weddings or birthday parties. However, it is now used by a wider range of social activities such as the annual meeting, the music performance of country singers, other entertainment programs, and the release of new products in the future. These objective and real needs of social activities provide an additional opportunity for the transformation of the farm industry. People are attracted to it, making it more diversified and more unexpected. This will continue to enhance its value, but also bring this village more vitality and passion.
