Falling Water on Rocky Terrace
With a great view to the greenery Nanjing Boulevard, the mountains, and Pacific Ocean, the site of “the Suites Taitung” has an exclusive view that’s hard to find. The building massing concept utilize the concrete characters to mimic the layers of setting back mountain rocks. Guests go through a three-dimensional water-scape and walk up to the man-made cave before entering hotel lobby. The hotel lobby is intentionally arranged on the second floor, with a great wide panorama to the city. We incorporate the existing tree at the northwest corner to vitalize the entrance space adjacent to the greenery boulevard. The sensational entrance sequence making the access experience a memorable journey.
The outdoor corridor and stairway are arranged on the northeast corner to respond to the monsoon, which introduce the breeze into the building and relieve the heat load. The waterscape adjacent to the stairway cooled the air, making the hallway a pleasant outdoor space. Horizontal balcony and the light color façade prevent the solar heat from entering the building and decrease the heat gains. By using the light color pebble wash concrete wall, the robust massing accent stands out while blending into the context. Pebble wash is a surface finish that’s frequently used in in Taitung. Small pebbles are mixed into cement and applied to the surface of the concrete wall. The cement part of the mixture will be partially washed out with water jet or sponge while it’s semi-dry. The pebbles will be revealed on the façade and create a ragged texture for the building façade.
