The designers' task was to create a comfortable house in the heavily urbanized and unstructured suburbs of Warsaw. The plot is surrounded by houses in various architectural styles and with different types of buildings: detached houses, semi-detached houses, terraced houses and rather small multi-family buildings of various shapes. The basic goal was to create, in the midst of architectural chaos, a simple and readable form, yet bold enough to meet the aesthetic needs of the client. The result were two simple cuboidal solids located one on top of the other, separated from each other by usage of different facade materials. The upper block has a woodden finish - both the exterior and the interior. The lower one is all white, cut out in several places. Wherever we cut the white shell of the building, there appears a gray center - on the terrace, at the entrance or in the window glyphs. Similar to cutting an apple.
The design process started with placing the white block as close as possible to the northeastern side of the plot, so as to leave the sunniest southwestern part for the recreational garden. The white block holds the daytime functions of the building.
The next step was to add the second "wooden" block, where all bedrooms are located. The geometry of the wooden block has beed stretched, so that all the rooms would have a lot of natural light.
From the northeast the second block creates an overhang that coveres the entrance to the building together with a parking space in front of it.
The third step was to "cut out" the terrace in the geometry of the white block in a way that provides access to the sun from the needed sides, i.e. from the south and west, and at the same time ensures intimacy, thanks to the recess in the block
The last step was a cut-out in the ground that cuts the area under the south-eastern corner of the white block. This allowed to create windows in the basement, from floor to ceiling, so that the gym located in the basement was a full-fledged, strongly illuminated room and also to provide a link between the basement and the garden. The mass in this place rests on posts placed away from the corner so as to create the impression that the corner of the building hangs in the air. The glass panes in the corner of the basement are only connected to each other with sealing glue.
The whole concept of cuboidal solids and omnipresent right angles is both complimented and interrupted by curvilinear stairs interwoven like a ribbon from the basement to the upper floor. One of the basic guidelines of the clients was to have exceptional stairs. They wanted them to be the signature of the house. In the middle of the building, a form was created that separates itself from everything around and cannot be overlooked, while at the same time it harmonizes with the whole concept. In this building one type of wood was used on all of the elements, also on the stairs to ensure the utmost consistency. Also the railings in the whole house, on the outside as well as the inside, are made of glass, without any grips. During the design process special attention was paid to the purity of form and material.
