The new Faculty of Informatics building at the West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin redefines the concept of a university campus by blending sustainable design with an environment that encourages social interaction and community engagement. More than just a place for classes and work, the building offers an immersive experience for students and staff, creating a dynamic, welcoming space that nurtures collaboration and interaction.
Built on a modular timber framework, the building’s design is guided by a thorough analysis of the faculty’s needs and an understanding of the importance of community in modern education. The structure connects seamlessly with existing facilities, with covered walkways linking different sections, enabling free movement and protection from the weather. These links encourage circulation throughout the campus while creating new social spaces where students and staff can meet, study informally, and build community connections. A central courtyard, surrounded by preserved trees, offers a peaceful retreat from academic life, integrating nature and green spaces into the daily experience of campus life.
In line with its commitment to sustainable architecture, the building’s design incorporates a range of environmentally friendly solutions. The timber structure not only minimizes the carbon footprint but also enhances customization and flexibility in layout, ensuring adaptability to future needs. Prefabricated elements enable rapid assembly, reducing construction impact and disruption to university operations.
The campus design emphasizes natural light and energy efficiency. Perforated façade panels allow users to control shading, reducing glare while maximizing daylight and lowering energy consumption. Solar panels installed on the roof generate renewable energy to power the campus, while a retention pool in the courtyard collects rainwater, naturally cooling the building in summer and further reducing the need for air conditioning.
Inside, social spaces are concentrated on the ground floor to create an inviting atmosphere from the moment students and staff enter the building. A café and student lounge offer spaces for relaxation, socialization, and casual study, making the campus a place where students can spend time even outside of their class schedules. On upper floors, studios and lecture theatres are arranged to promote collaboration, creating an interactive learning environment that fosters engagement and connection.
