The site is located at the riverside of Ming-Chih River, Chaozhou Town, PingTung. It is a triangle shape site and located at road crossing intersection which has a terrific sight view. The pointed part of the triangle site faces main road of Chaozhou Town, one side faces school campus and another side faces Ming-Chih River, these conditions shows this unique site with unusual footprint and also interesting urban character.
It is incredibly exciting to deal with a site with so many interesting characters, so we wish by using architectural design strategy to response and implant all these unique elements into existing urban structure. Through environmental and cultural studies, we found out Chaozhou Town is actually the headstream of Taiwanese traditional drama, therefore by taking this schematic concept, we imagine this site will grow an “Urban Drama Stage” and the architecture space will start to generate various chemical reactions with urban context.
By using the multiple faces character of the triangle shape site, we decide to rotate space massing blocks at different levels which create several cantilevered and overlapped spaces to become layers of outdoor “Stages” (balcony platform). One stage faces Chaozhou Town center, one stage faces broad school campus, and the other stage faces Ming-Chih River which has the most residential and leisure section. This massing layout fully response the site’s special character in the existing urban context, making every balcony platforms a STAGE, people on the stage perform multiple special possibilities and the people off the stage perform ordinary life experiences.
On the other hand, local government recently tries aggressively to develop an eco-friendly riverside environment and enhance the importance of Ming-Chih River to the neighborhood. By taking this opportunity, we decide to guide the green plants next to the riverside, leading this green belt from horizontal to vertical path and all the way implant on the architecture platform. We wish architecture not only represents a functional space massing but also an artificial landscape sculpture in urban areas. Also, we designed a 10 meter solid tilted shaped wall facing urban traffic road, this act not only create an impression of the local environmental surroundings, connects historical local memories, but also block unpleasant existing site elements. Because of this huge wall, the space opens to the campus side and the river side, which connects an extended horizontal space, people can feel an extremely long and fluid space expansion inside the architectural space.
