Atelier ENTROPIC, in collaboration with Studio4SPACE, presented a competition design for an energy-efficient kindergarten and site layout in Michałowice. The competition required a design that minimized children’s movement between levels while adhering to the strict Local Development Plan, which restricted building areas and mandated a multi-story approach.
These constraints inspired the project’s core concept: a continuous loop with a gentle slope, creating a two-story building experienced as a single, flowing level. This form allows children to move freely, accessing the garden without stairs, while still meeting planning requirements.
Psychology informed the design choices for child users, creating a safe, calm space that fosters creativity and curiosity. Playful and educational features are visible from the entrance, encouraging children to explore the entire facility and surroundings. Classrooms have direct access to a secure courtyard designed for play and relaxation.
The building’s pitched roof gradually increases in height, creating varied spaces in each classroom. Each room is designed to support activities for different developmental stages, adapting to children’s growth. The flexible design allows for new spatial experiences each year, including differing light and views. The roof design nods to regional architecture with a contemporary twist, adding dynamic character.
The main entrance, with an overhanging extension, forms a natural canopy. This section houses a multi-functional hall with the highest ceiling, creating a central space with direct access to a terrace.
The garden features zones for sensory exploration and physical play, allowing children to define their activities through creativity. The choice of wood for structure and finish enhances indoor air quality, acoustics, and thermal comfort. Importantly, sustainably sourced wood has a negative CO₂ emission, supporting environmental sustainability.
