The Sky Clubhouse is a compact facility building for a residential project in the suburb of Bangkok, Thailand. This project serves as the functional building for this private housing project, which consists of a small gym on the upper floor, the interior living spaces and the exterior areas for multi-purpose activities.
With the limited land area, the main idea of the project is to create the open and continuous space that can connect between the inside and outside, below and upper levels. The design of ‘stepping floors’ serves as a way to combine the circulations, floor plans, activities and the landscape leading visitors from the ground level along the way to the gym on the upper floor. Meanwhile the space under the steps has been used to hide all the service areas of the building.
The steps also used to divide the floor into small platforms serving various activities and functions. Each of these platforms is provided with an adequate and flexible space that can alter to fit the needs for several distinctive functions such as a relaxing space, a working table or an amphitheater for a small group of people. Furthermore, between this platforms are integrated with small gardens which are carefully placed to add the greenery atmosphere and create privacy between each platform at the same time.
The overall materials are the standard economical materials in Thailand, including concrete, terrazzo floors and aluminium windows. However, the main character of the building is the white aluminium stripes façade which covers all interior space on the ground floor, and twist gradually from the vertical to horizontal to reduce the direct sunlight from the above and connect the view to the outdoor area and landscape garden around the site at the lover level. As appearing from the outside, it likes the building is slowly opening ‘the curtain’ to explore the outside world.
