In the run up to the 2012 Olympics, the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) is investing significant funds in its sports facilities, including a £12m sports and leisure facility, known as the Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre. ADP’s design for the new building will help the University to achieve its ambition of becoming one of the top ten providers of sports education in the UK – delivering high quality courses under its sub-brand, UCLan Sport.Designed to be a showcase for UCLan Sport, the building houses large flexible spaces that can be used for conferences, exhibitions and student events. Teaching rooms and laboratories are supported with hi-spec sports provisions including an eight-court sports hall, squash courts, a fitness suite, activity rooms, and a 300-seat viewing gallery. To cater for the University’s diverse range of students, the building also incorporates a 90 pupil nursery, Muslim prayer facilities and allows for the provision of out-of-hours services.
The building has achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.
