The Shepherd is a new cultural arts center located in the Little Village neighborhood of Detroit. Aimed at contributing to the city’s arts renaissance, Library Street Collective commissioned OSD to reimagine a derelict 3-acre city block into a network of public spaces, outdoor art galleries, play areas, food and beverage destinations, and events spaces. In collaboration with Tony Hawk, artists Charles McGee and McArthur Binion, and designers Undecorated and PRO, existing buildings such as a garage, church, rectory, and farmhouse are converted into galleries, workshops, studios, and F&B spaces designed to inject new life into the creative community. Planting and materials act as a living outdoor gallery, framing a diversity of destinations. At the same time, the campus is conceived as both artful and sustainable: recycled brick and glass honor the materials of the church and its stained-glass windows, while planting transforms into vibrant red during the dormant months, bringing vitality to the public even when the space is not in use.
