Studio Shaumyika Sharma’s boutique addition to a 1930s sparkling white art deco guesthouse in Lucknow - home to many travelers and scholars – was inspired by 1970s Bollywood posters and 1880s Indian miniature paintings as well as the de Stijl movement. Clean lines and bold colours contrast with textile-inspired details like the front door’s woodblock ‘doorknob’. Adopting the Bauhaus ideal of a Gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art), Sharma took the opportunity, to design the architecture, interiors, landscaping, and furniture – made using repurposed window grilles and shutters – as well as the lasercut light fixtures, and an abstract tiled portrait of the original owner.
