Serving as a neighborhood anchor, the Kroc Center offers arts, education and recreation programs supported by an aquatics complex, a gymnasium, classrooms designed for conventional learning, an assembly complex and administrative offices. The facility is nestled on a 16-acre site in a topographic valley near major arterials and public parks.
The building's shape consists of three distinct forms housing assembly, recreation, and education components. The oval-shaped assembly space is placed prominently in the center of the site, visible from the surrounding neighborhood as well as from within the other building forms. The recreational component anchors the site and is functionally rectilinear, serving as a backdrop to the assembly element. The north facade of this component is substantially glass, revealing the primary circulation path and displaying the activity within. Hovering above and bridging these two volumes is the educational program element. This bar of flexible classrooms physically ties the complex together and provides a defined point of building and site entry. Together, the three volumes establish a found program element: a festival plaza, which weaves the building proper and the adjacent public parks together.
