Nestled in the serene East End of Long Island between East Hampton and Bridgehampton, The Sagaponack creates an idyllic seaside retreat with its contemporary coastal presence. Formerly the Wainscott Inn, the property’s $4 million transformation updated all 30 guest rooms, the lobby, and private and public outdoor spaces while introducing new resort-style enhancements and amenities. Tasked with the project’s interior design, JCJ Architecture thoughtfully marries the modern components of the hotel's renovation with the building’s rustic and rooted local history. Embracing the property's unique background and highlighting its family-friendly aspects, the design team layered an eclectic mix of textiles inspired by the landscape, timeless metal accents, and rich wood tones.
The Sagaponack offers three room styles, each with distinct charm and classic characteristics: inviting Main Inn rooms, spacious bungalows, and stylish studio rooms, all of which are outfitted with contemporary furnishings and earthy tones of sage, deep green, airy gray, and dark navy blue with brass accents. The studio and bungalow units were intended not only for seasonal travelers, families, and group stays but also for long-term travelers in the off-season months. Throughout each guestroom, JCJ customized the elements in each typology to establish a more comfortable stay for those booking extended trips, including key design considerations such as ample space and access to amenities.
The property’s transformation focused on enhancing and expanding the amenity and accommodation offerings through design and material selections that are reminiscent of residential environments. The Main Inn rooms and suites feature an abstract mural nodding to the American Ground Nut, immersing travelers in the locality of the hotel and establishing a brand connection to the hotel's sister property, The Menhaden, in Greenport. Ideal for families, nine bungalow rooms feature a separate living area with a kitchenette and private outdoor space, creating an indoor-outdoor experience. The studio rooms provide a relaxed coastal sensibility, featuring a flexible layout with a wet bar, multi-functional table, sleek wardrobe unit, and a secluded outdoor area.
Through a thoughtful attention to detail and an immersive approach to locality, JCJ’s approach to The Sagaponack balances hospitality-grade finishes with a comforting residential look and feel, creating a welcoming retreat for various travelers throughout the year.
