The challenge for MBH Architects was to take the existing structures and barn, and create a modern hospitality atmosphere with a lobby, tasting rooms, and offices. MBH’s team built upon the concept of juxtaposing the old and the new parts of the winery as yin and yang. This respected the existing structures, but incorporated the new life of the winery. MBH’s team wove the concept of active storytelling into the landscape, articulating a path through the vineyard to the winery. The building itself actively expresses this story; it is made of reclaimed wood and expressed in an elliptical space which mimics the form of the winery barrel. The materials reflect the interplay between a high-end hospitality experience, and the necessary resilience of a working winery. The recycled cedar and redwood respect the surrounding Sonoma landscape, exhibiting local materials with a modern aesthetic. Through careful project planning and projection, the team was able to execute the project with minimal disruption to the operating winery.
