The 37㎡site of the Lucky Cookies Bakery is a street front shop with a 5.7m ceiling height and a 3m depth. The 1:2 bottom to height ratio and the tall glass façade make the site a natural display window. Since the cashier and bakery display has to be set near the only entrance, which is located at the short end of the site, opening up to the interior corridor of the mall, the major space that can be seen from the street therefore has to be the kitchen, which occupies 3/4 area according to the design brief. Thus we decide to turn the usually back-of-house kitchen into a displayable feature of the project, “live broadcasting" the pastry making process to the pedestrian. Utilizing both interior and exterior patio seating areas, we design a series of isomorphic "rocks" scattered around both inside and outside the store, each carrying a function such as machine room, cooking table, cashier desk, display stand, bench, light box signage, etc. They help to weaken the boundaries of the store by visually and spatially connecting across the site border, allowing the space to “flow” in and out freely, eliminating the sense of restraint caused by the small area. The 243 detachable light boxes covering the “display window wall” make full use of the ceiling height advantage and the north-facing character of the site. They together form a folded glowing screen, outlining the various silhouettes of paper-cut pastries to attract customers.
