The River Run House borrows from the local farmhouse vernacular and provides a contemporary twist to meet the needs of this 5-person family. The project’s biggest design challenge was balancing the spectacular north-facing St. John River vista with the desire for southern solar exposure.
The design splits the house in two and creates a transparent glass entry that links the two sides. This split allows the sun to naturally heat the entry, while at the same time offering privacy between the children’s and parents’ bedrooms.
This home, which exceeds R2000 energy standards, incorporates a geothermal heating system, passive ventilation strategies, water reducing fixtures, and maximizes natural daylighting to reduce energy consumption while welcoming a spectacular riverbank view.
