We were selected as one of the youngest design teams participating the “100 Campus Renewal Plan” organized by Nanshan District, Shenzhen to renovate Birongwan Kindergarten. The existing condition of the kindergarten had all kinds of problems, chaotic façade color palette, disproportioned form, bad natural light condition for the interior space, and wasted spaces that could put in better use with bad infrastructure condition. After thorough site investigation and discussions with the headmaster and teachers, We changed the main colors of the façade into dark brown and dark green symbolizing the banyan tree, and also adopt orange color that symbolizes sun as embellishment. A series of existing problems were solved through one design concept. Modular pre-fabrication, low tech construction and other design considerations were applied in the design process in response to limited design and construction time.
On the northwest facade, we expanded the window openings of the corridor to the limit, and applied louvers, air-conditioning hoods, and verandas on the first and second floors platforms, which together form several horizontal green lines across the entire facade just like cascading banyan trees. The attached façade components make full use of the horizontally expanded volume of the building itself, and simply integrate the chaotic appearance. The multi-function room’s round window with orange frame looks like the sun rising from the shade of trees, becoming the most eye-catching element on the main facade.
A vault was designed as the main architectural feature in the multi-function room. There were many issues that were solved by having a vault in the multi-function room from spatial, psychological, acoustic, infrastructural and aesthetical aspects. The vault provides appropriate height for children basketball activity, in the meanwhile soften the 5 meter height space, and made the space more comfortable for children. The MEP pipes were also hided in the vault ceiling. There are circular openings on the vault integrated with HVAC vents and the orange felt material behind the openings helped to absorb the noises by sport activities. We decided to eliminate the physical walls between classrooms and corridor, replaced by 5 meter long folding glass doors, which could free the kids from class room, and explore the kindergarten more easily.
