The Rise is a mixed-use, Passive House-certified development that provides 72 units of supportive and affordable housing for justice-involved families and low-income households along with over 13,000 square feet of community facility space in Brownsville, Brooklyn. The development employs Active Design and Trauma-Informed Design principles to improve the social, physical, and mental wellbeing of residents. Soft, neutral colors and natural light provide a therapeutic living environment, while simple and easy-to-navigate shared spaces with clear sightlines mitigate perception of crowding. The building also offers lush, landscaped terraces and biophilic elements such as a mossy living wall in the residential lobby and mesh trellises with vines that cascade down the façade.
A rooftop urban farm will grow fresh produce, improving healthy food access and education in the neighborhood. The two-level Community Hub provides wrap-around services for residents and justice-involved community members and accommodates a variety of programs by local groups including community gatherings, employment training and placement, legal services, after-school programs, financial literacy programs, and computer training classes. On the lower level, a fitness center with two exercise studios featuring green, blue, and yellow painted mountains supports physical activities like yoga and spin classes.
Located at the busy intersection of Strauss Street and East New York Avenue, The Rise emphasizes community with urban design considerations such as large glass storefronts, recessed, well-lit, pedestrian and bike-friendly entrances that facilitate deep sidewalks, and a welcoming street front. Brick relief patterns add texture and variation to the exterior, while recessed windows provide shade and cast shadows that reflect shades of blue, teal, and muted gray. Three main volumes clad in a dark gray brick and capped with residential amenity terraces “step up” along the front façade. As a physical representation of the social impact within the building, those bays inspired the name – The Rise.
