For this 2007 production of Monteverdi’s The Return of Ulysses, conductor Jane Glover and Director Diane Paulus continued their critically acclaimed partnership with the Chicago Opera Theatre. The set designed by Rafael Viñoly abstracted the mythical island of Ithaca into minimalist, multi-leveled cubes with folding doors that revealed blood-red interiors to suggest decadence within. Simple, modernist costumes and spare decorative elements added to the stark, clean look of the set. Further, the stage was lit with intense colors to visually display the mood of a given scene upon the set.
