The residental piers - Vindholmen
Client: Arendals Fossekompani - https://www.arendalsfoss.no/
A maritime residental pier city with boats, city squares, apartments, beaches and urban life for everyone.
The future life of Vindholmen will take place in a district of self-esteem and soul. The vision is that the place is interpreted, diluted, renewed, highlighted and released so that all natural values, stories and cultural values live on and evolve in the forthcoming urbanization in harmony and balance with both the local architecture and the beautiful nature.
The masterplan is developed on the basis of the contextual characteristic, the characteristic landscape, nature, historical traces, the colorful apparance of the local architecture and the local tradition of designing buildings, and experiences directed towards the water. Vindholmen will be experienced both as familiar and new, by building on local anchoring and adding new ways of living and unfolding.
The district has three main stories that lays the fundation of Vindholmen:
1. The mountain
2. The harbour
3. The piers
1. The mountain – the natural heritage
Facing north-west, there is a steep, dramatic slope in the mountains that forms the back of the plot and backdrop from Tromøysund. On top of the slope, the Vindholmen neighbors are located on Vindholmheia. The future plan will take steps to repair the transition between Vindholmheia and Vindholmen.
The landscape at Vindholmheia is drawn down on Vindholmen and continued in the area's future green landscape wedges. On the Løgholmen free area, an extension of the natural landscape is established and the area is relocated to a more original state, which provides a connection across Kystveien.
The mountain houses, facing Kystveien form a sculptural settlement that establishes building terracing mountain formations. The mountain houses blocks the noise and are inspired by the surrounding mountains and the characteristic nature.
2. The harbour – the industrial heritage
On the south-side there are marked historical tracks, coatings, docks and fillings after the use of the area as harbour and shipyard. This area has a depth of time and valuable senses that support the future harbour spaces in the plan. - The same does the buildings organization. The harbour houses will be built in protracted and advanced formations of various building typologies on the Vindpier and in the Historical Drop, to form good urban spaces with shelter and sun.
Overall, the Harbour Houses frames a sunny harbour area around Lille Pollen with boat slips for a maritime urban life and a welcoming gesture oriented towards the water and Arendal city.
3. The piers – the cultural heritage
North-east, there is Krøgenes, a small scale environment right on the water's edge, with private gardens in a beautiful archipelago landscape.
Inspired Krøgenes' building typology, the future piers on Vindholmen are situated. They are composed of different building typologies so they form lively, densified new interpretations of the local building tradition oriented towards the water with unique acess and boat slips for all.
