The
RA[y]DIAN Atrium As Infrastructure
The
RA[y]DIAN redefines the skyline of Yerevan on its privileged natural
podium, terminating views up Teryan Street and inviting people to the
sky on its soon-to-be famous gondola ride.
A taut
composition of wedge hinged by tower, it subverts the atrium typology
of hotels by transforming it into actual city infrastructure:
earthworks of public space. A silent gondola carries visitors through
this large public room from a cafat its base to a panoramic
restaurant up high. Prismatic residential low-rises define the
perimeter of the master plan.
The thin elegant slab tower
presents a streamlined icon to the city instead of an oppressive wall.
All hotel rooms enjoy southerly views to the city of Yerevan and Mount
Ararat beyond. An outdoor infinity pool straddles the existing wall,
bridging old and new, while the indoor garden cleans the air and lifts
the weary traveler?s spirit. No Fancy CurvesTo be built of tried and proven local constructionmethods, the design of the RA[y]DIAN IntercontinentalHotel is guided by lucid logic. There are absolutely nocurves in plan or profile (costing 4x as much as straightplanes, typically.) The excitement emerges from theenergies between hinged simple volumes.Three Accommodation Types, Three IdentitiesThe simple volumes offer clarity: tower, wedge, triangles. The hotel rooms are stacked in the tower enjoyingdynamic southern views of Yerevan and efficient servicefrom hotel staff. The terraced serviced apartments line the wedge, eachcanted south for views and to deflect wind. This ensures aquiet separation yet easy access to all hotel services andpublic amenities. The Business Center is within easyproximity for the business person enjoying longer stays.A public terrace at each level allows for a relaxing way tounwind at the end of the day while taking in mountainviews. The residential buildings are in separate lower structures, rather than an imposing tall volume of congested stackedhousing. They define the edge of this major civic workand share the fitness center and gardens with the hotel. These crisp, angular residential buildings taper gentlytowards the south and allow for clear sightlines andoptimum sunshine for residents while deflecting thestrong north winds.Future ExpansionThe structural system is sized to carry the load of an extratwenty floors above, allowing for flexibility in phasing.Stairways and corridors are generous enough to servefuture increases in occupant load safely. The parking planis designed to be easily extended as future needs arise.Rooms can easily be reconfigured by joining themsequentially allowing for inexpensive flexibility in thecounts between 1 bedroom units, 2 bedroom units and thesuites. The masterplan includes provisions for a third low-riseresidential building of similar ultramodern design withpremium views of the city as well. The RA[y]DIAN is intended to establish Yerevan as aworld-class destination for not only business travelers, but pleasure seekers as well by redefining the skyline, enhancing the local landscape and enlivening the city byluring the public into vibrant spaces in the sky.
