The project was born out of the desire for updating a tired and dark 1920’s residence and the space for a growing family – he, an architect, and she (expecting), an attorney.
A modern yet recognizable form merges with existing home providing the desired space and contemporary detail. The addition is clad in a Norwegian wood siding product, Kebony, intended to be exposed and patina with time. The wood (Southern Yellow Pine in this instance) is infused with a bio-based liquid to preserve and stabilize the material making is suitable for exterior applications.
Detailed as a rainscreen, the siding lends depth, richness and a controlled texture against the irregular skintled brickwork. The modern and refined detailing stands in contrast to the heavy roof and coarse texture of the existing brick structure.
A bedroom ‘wing’ with bathrooms along with a guest suite at the attic makes up the new structure. A covered entrance and screened porch are created by the voids below. The existing first floor was reconfigured with clear circulation, an open plan at the renovated kitchen and dining, while upgrading the existing stair to act as a screen between the social and more intimate spaces.
