The Press Club at the Monterey County Weekly is much more than a delicious and healthy juice bar and café to rejuvenate the talented writers and editors next door. Designed by Studio Schicketanz, the Press Club serves as a creative and intellectual hub for the Seaside community.
Comprised of a coffee house, juice bar, art space and performance venue, the Press Club is thoughtfully decorated in black and white sketches of pop culture icons while a simple, yet powerful inscription of the first amendment encompasses the entirety of the entry wall. To amplify the industrial style, the exposed ceiling is painted black with low-hanging lights, while cement floors create the perfect innovative ambiance for a study session or coffee break with friends.
In true Studio Schicketanz fashion, the Press Club is sustainably conscience, utilizing immense natural light from the glass industrial garage door, which also acts as an entrance to the café and outside seating area, half hexagon-shaped window nook, and multiple skylights. The LEED Platinum certified building is decorated in refurbished furniture—salvaged red leather from a warehouse damaged by the recent Napa earthquake was reused for the booths and the great table and hand-hewn white oak juice bar are both made from reclaimed wood.
The Press Club is dedicated to the late Charles Moore, an AIA Lifetime Achievement Award Winner and world-renowned architect, writer and educator who originally built the building in 1959. With its unprecedented architecture and charming interior, the Press Club is a spectacular new home for the community that encourages creativity.
