The Portal

The Portal is the winning entry of the international competition Doorscape, The Space Beyond the Threshold—a design contest born to reflect on the architecture of the entrance space, conceived by Oikos Venezia and the Querini Stampalia Foundation.
The design reinterprets the theme of the threshold as a series of spaces, not only spaces to pass through but also spaces in which to stop. This is achieved by reinterpreting the classical form of the arch in a contemporary way. A sculpted void invites people in and thanks to an interplay of perspectives guides them into an open courtyard where they can pause, sit on the wood bench and look up at the sky.
This type of entrance was very common in traditional architecture throughout the Mediterranean. Often accompanied by a bench served not only as an entry threshold but also as a meeting place.
