The Park
Eklekt Atelier
The Park is conceived as a new model of public recreational infrastructure — a hybrid landscape that merges sport, ecology, leisure, and civic life into a single spatial system. Located in the southern part of Kraków, Poland, the project transforms a fragmented and underutilized area into a large-scale district sports and recreation center with metropolitan ambition and strong environmental identity.
Rather than designing a conventional sports complex or a traditional urban park, the proposal establishes an immersive public landscape organized around water, movement, and collective experience. The project operates simultaneously across multiple scales: as a neighborhood park for everyday recreation, as ecological infrastructure supporting biodiversity and water retention, and as a regional destination capable of hosting large public events.
Water forms the conceptual and spatial core of the project. Outdoor swimming pools, recreational water zones, and a large retention pond with an island generate a continuous landscape system that structures the site and defines its atmosphere. Beyond recreation, the water network improves the local microclimate, supports rainwater management, and strengthens ecological resilience. Seasonal adaptability plays a key role in the design strategy, allowing the Olympic pool to transform into an ice rink during winter months, extending the park’s functionality throughout the year.
The landscape is designed as an active and accessible terrain. Informal pathways, gardens, recreational zones, and shaded public spaces are interwoven with sports infrastructure including tennis courts, outdoor fitness areas, playing fields, and skate facilities. Instead of separating functions, the project creates overlapping layers of activity, encouraging coexistence between intensive use and moments of rest and immersion in nature.
At the center of the masterplan stands a multi-purpose indoor arena accommodating up to 3,000 spectators. Conceived as both an architectural landmark and an extension of the landscape, the building introduces a metropolitan scale to the development while maintaining openness and visual continuity with the surrounding park. The arena enables concerts, sporting events, and civic gatherings, transforming The Park into a year-round public destination extending beyond the local district.
The project is designed in phases to allow gradual implementation and long-term adaptability. The first phase focuses on the outdoor pools and water landscape, while the second phase introduces the complete sports and recreation program together with the indoor arena.
By integrating ecological systems, public accessibility, and diverse recreational programs, The Park proposes a contemporary vision of civic landscape architecture — one that prioritizes resilience, inclusivity, and continuous transformation. Rather than functioning as a singular object, the project operates as a living public environment shaped by water, activity, and evolving social interaction.
