Vertical Expression of Hong Kong’s Lively and Energetic Street Life
A 29-story mixed-use commercial tower incorporating retail, restaurants and cinemas, The One, is located on Nathan Road, one of the main streets in Hong Kong. In the process of designing, Tange Associates always have Globalization and Localization, two opposing thoughts, in mind. Although the economic growth drives the internationalization of the city, we place importance on how we integrate a sense of place or country with architecture. The site is located in the city of Hong Kong, where has been the center of finance and trading in Asia, while well-known city of shopping and gourmet in the world. We thought a sense of Hong Kong is various characters and spaces which people can experience with one’s five senses, that is exactly what people can feel in Hong Kong, where lots of food-related shops such as the retail shops or food stalls stand side by side, comparing with large shopping malls. The façade’s eye-catching layout is a vertical expression of Hong Kong’s lively and energetic street life, applying a unique façade design to the different functions contained within the building. The façade offers a different aspect of the building at night when the vibrant composition of the facade is animated by the illumination of the interior lights. As there has been the plan to make extensions to the hotel adjoining the site, we have received no request from the client for the façade on the border. However, out of consideration for people on the street and people living in the surrounding area, we proposed the simple, but muted and shiny champagne-tiled façade, instead of the cold huge concrete wall. The One, the tallest retail complex in Hong Kong and well recognized not only from the surrounding area but also from Hong Kong Island, is a new landmark on Nathan Road.
