Color is Light – Litur er Ljós
The clear air and light of the north create unusual conditions. Depending on seasons or time of day, light creates completely new color- and landscapes.
Houses in Iceland were designed in brilliant colors in the early years of the 20th century. Today grey and white dominate modern architecture. The relevance of color in urban context has to be strengthened again!
colorful Reykjavik
The development of the Old Harbour along with the Orfirisey area offers the opportunity to establish a new kind of an urban color concept that implies architecture, infrastructure and landscape. It is obvious to use colors of Icelandic nature. The colors shall appear familiar and friendly.
old town center – new town center
The old town center of Reykjavik (Kvosin) also marked the geographic center of the town until midst of 20th century. After WWII the city spread enormously to the east – the Old Harbour was relegated to the fringe. The proposal suggests new residential areas on landfills in the west of Orfirisey to strengthen the old town center.
tourism and residential areas – the future of the Old Harbour
Based on long-term considerations, industry and large scale labor catchment areas will displace out of the narrowed harbour area. That gives the opportunity of a step-by-step transformation with two focuses: The Old Harbour as a tourist attraction and the Old Harbour as a family-friendly residential area. Built connections, social and cultural connections within the area enable a successful vitalization.
