In the world of blocks we need cracks in order for those blocks to absorb the surrounding, otherwise the block keeps doing what it does best; BLOCKING. A canyon reminiscent object evokes those cracks in the matter. But canyons are a good source of layered information. Though we perceive them as a vertical puncture in the earth, their beauty hides in the fact that they represent the earth in horizontal layers. Grand canyon for example as one of the most studied geological landscapes in the world offers rich and diverse fossil record and significant amount of geologic features and rock types, and numerous caves. This project in Berlin’s Mitte deals with structure layered out of horizontal planes. There is a fine transition in form between each floor; however the floor-plates completely change on each level allowing for diversity of experience in space. Like a porous block it tempts to attract the patron to its cavities of different functions.
