Set along the ecological corridor of Wadi Hanifa, The Observatories Park reimagines the contemporary public landscape as a layered journey of discovery-where nature, culture, and human experience converge. Rooted in the ambitions of Saudi Vision 2030, the project transcends the conventional notion of a park, positioning itself as an experiential framework that fosters reflection, interaction, and cultural continuity.
The masterplan unfolds through three interconnected zones. The Wadi Zone engages directly with the natural terrain, integrating native planting, stone pathways, and water-sensitive interventions that respond to the seasonal rhythms of the valley. The Urban Zone introduces a dynamic layer of activity, where cafés, galleries, and cultural spaces are articulated through shaded arcades, colonnades, and permeable edges. At its core, the Heartland Zone offers a tranquil retreat-an introspective landscape defined by shaded gardens, palm groves, and quiet courtyards designed for contemplation and passive use.
Materiality plays a central role in grounding the project within its context. Locally sourced stone, textured plasters, and earth-toned finishes echo the geological identity of Wadi Hanifa, while timber shading structures and palm frond elements reinterpret traditional construction techniques. The architectural language draws from Najdi heritage, with simplified forms, thickened walls, recessed openings, and carefully proportioned voids that respond to climate and light.
This sensibility is further expressed through a contemporary abstraction of traditional patterns. Perforated screens, geometric paving, and layered shading devices reinterpret regional motifs, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow across the park. These elements are not merely decorative; they act as environmental filters, enhancing thermal comfort while reinforcing cultural continuity.
At the heart of the project, a constellation of observatories punctuates the landscape-each offering a distinct spatial and sensory experience. Unified by material consistency and architectural restraint, they collectively form a narrative that bridges past and present. Through this integration of landscape, material, and identity, The Observatories Park becomes a living cultural terrain-anchored in place, yet oriented toward the future.
