Founded in 1920, The Nightingale-Bamford School includes grades K-12 and has, for over 80 years, been at the forefront of women’s education. Over-crowded building conditions threatened to compromise the quality of Nightingale-Bamford’s education. Prior to the renovation and expansion, Nightingale-Bamford was housed in the original 1929 structure, designed to accommodate only half of the School's current enrollment. JLGA was retained to create and implement a Master Plan to develop and establish Nightingale-Bamford’s program requirements. Working with the Board of Trustees, the School Administration and key members of the facility, JLGA developed various long-range physical expansion options. The alternative design options were assessed with respect to program objectives, cost and scheduling. The School was completely reconfigured into a 100,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art education facility providing new classrooms for lower, middle and upper schools, a lunchroom, a two-story library, a gymnasium and a multi-purpose auditorium. The building was outfitted with new building systems, HVAC and updated communication technology. The Nightingale-Bamford School expansion is an excellent example of a project requiring creative architectural skills with regard to both renovation and new construction techniques. The tight urban site required building adjacent to, above and below the existing structure.
