New Amsterdam Waterfront
History
The Dutch proven strategy to embrace the water in a sustainable way is the key element of the design for the New Amsterdam Waterfront.
For centuries the Dutch are famous for the way the Netherlands is built. The Netherlands is a geographically low-lying country with about 25% of its area and 21% of its population located below sea level and 50% of its land lying less than one metre above sea level. Significant land area has been gained through land reclamation and preserved through an elaborate system of polders and dikes. Another factor that has influenced its physical appearance is that The Netherlands is among the most densely populated country on earth. Necessarily, The Netherlands is highly urbanised.
The New Yorker
Our believe in greener sustainable cities can only be created by the people who live in those cities.
Studies and analysis of how these cities can be designed should start with a thorough analysis of the current and future users. The design of the New Amsterdam Waterfront is based on an analysis of the needs for the New Yorker.
Rest and relaxation
The New Yorker can find rest and relaxation in the New Amsterdam Waterfront. The area offers privacy for visitors to walk with dogs, read books or just want to sit privately in the park. By using the calming sound of streaming water, the calming scent of lavender and a more comfortable warm light in the evening the area allows visitors to enter a more relaxing atmosphere.
Mindfulness and Inspiration
A large part of the area can help to inspire and motivate the New Yorker to think about what it really means to contribute to a more greener environment. Besides this the visitor can pro actively involve in actives which contribute to a more greener and meaningful area. A part of the area is designed with vegetable gardens where the New Yorker can farm their own fruits and vegetables. Another part of this area is the green landscape of trees where New Yorkers are invited to adopt a tree and contribute to a more greener environment.undisturbing walk, cycle and sport throughout the area.
The New Amsterdam Waterfront
Restructure the Manhattan East River Greenway with a future proof sustainable concept.
The New Amsterdam Waterfront is primarily designed to restructure the East River Greenway in a more greener way. A greener landscape alone can not create an meaningful environment for New York.
The New Amsterdam Waterfront is an area where sustainability, awareness and respect for the environment and people are values of high importance. The New Amsterdam Waterfront is a structure of islands of reclaimed land. The structure extends the Manhattan grid into the water and is therefore a consistent architectural layout which resembles the city structure.
The proposed extension of the Manhattan grid into the East River sets a new standard for large urban waterfronts. The typical Manhattan grid is continued into the New Amsterdam Waterfront reclaimed land model. The design will create a new integrated experience for New York with an urban landscape that is respectful of the old while creating a new waterfront for New York’s future. Although the Manhattan grid is extrapolated into the New Amsterdam Waterfront the contrast of the city’s urban experience and the more greener waterfront experience is immediately visible. The New Amsterdam Waterfront is a gift to all New Yorkers who live in the high densely populated Manhattan. The design will become the model for such an extensive development demonstrating the utmost sensitivity towards Manhattans history, culture and the built and natural environments
The main route
The spinal of the New Amsterdam Waterfront is a broad boulevard which only allows alternative transportation. The key element of the boulevard is a wide two lane bicycle path with a path alongside for runners. The boulevard is designed for a safe, quick and efficient way to move through the area. Manhattans Greenway is closed circle now.
The alternative route
Besides the main route the visitor of the area will be invited to walk, run or cycle along a less quicker route. The visitor can be inspired to relax and have a more relaxing experience away from the city’s dynamic. Parallel to this experience it also allows the visitor to explore the landscape of the New Amsterdam Waterfront.
The islands
The islands of reclaimed land forms the land structure of the design.
To implement a meaningful design for the missing link in the Manhatten Greenway we have focused on four focus points: natural waterfront, sustainability, innovative materials, and community engagement.
We believe in greener sustainable cities where people can live in full harmony with the environment. Our designs for new urban areas are based on our basic believe that we need to rethink every aspect of the way people live in future proof cities.
New York is a efficient designed city. The Manhattan grid, the high rise and the extensive public transportation network offers New York the shortest travel time for commuters. This design is perfect for the city as the financial center of the world.
Nevertheless the old financial values have proven not to contribute to a more greener environment. In this dynamically changing era new values will become more important.
The New Yorker is more aware of the deterioration of the pshysical state of our planet and ourselves when we primarily focus on economic development. A more sustainable use of our environment and ourselves both physically and mentally becomes more important.
Many New Yorkers seem to seek alternative ways of transportation such as bikes, watertaxis and public transportation. They also seem to seek more rest and relaxation in nature and more awareness in the use of water and organic food. The New Amsterdam Waterfront would like to inspire New Yorkers in finding these new needs and gives the New Yorker the ideal environment to create a stronger awareness of their environment and behavior.
Natural waterfront
Embrace the water by a more overall fluid transition from land to water.
Climate change and sea-level rise place an additional pressure on New York waterfronts. The design is anticipating on the constant changing waterfronts and is unique for its less rigid boundaries between land and water. The seaward structure of the design has the shape and function of a natural reef.
The water structure in the design is an new environment where fish and wildlife have their new natural habitat. The design focuses on the environment for fish and wildlife and creates areas where nature has a more important influence on its own development. Reptiles, fish and other shore animals can move freely through the green and waterways. The paths are designed to ensure the undisturbed habitat of wildlife.
The area is surrounded by a water structure and will give visitors an unique waterfront experience. Visitors of the area have an opportunity to be surrounded by a green landscape and natural water. Signage and educational walls will inform and educate visitors of the presence of wildlife and the vulnerability of our environment.
Sustainability
Create a “green awareness” by adopting sustainable solutions in the heart of the design.
Sustainable solutions will be implemented in the DNA of the New Amsterdam Waterfront. The design is focused on alternative transportation and will not allow motorized vehicles in the area. Bicycling, walking, (inline) skating and transportation via water is a greener way to move quickly through the area. The New Amsterdam Waterfront is designed to enable a more fluid, safer and easier accessible environment for alternative transportation.
Following the Roosevelt Island Tidal Energy (RITE) project the New Amsterdam Waterfront will be designed and developed with free flow tidal turbines which will provide the area with emission free electricity. By integrating these turbines in the initial design of the project sustainability will not become an added feature but an important intrinsic value.
Innovative materials
Use pure components and innovative material to create a future proof environment.
The greenway path, benches, park utilities etc. will be constructed by pure components or natural material and/or products that are easy to disassemble. The most important component of the lighting system of the area is a state of the art technology that will reduce energy costs, have a longer life cycle and therefore a more sustainable product. The bicycle path will be lighted by a Bicycle Lighting Interactive Path System (BLIPS) which will use the Philips CosmoPolis light system. BLIPS will use sensors that can identify cyclists and will activate the lighting in the bicycle path in front of a cyclist and will dim five meters behind the cyclist. This will lead to a more energy efficient use of lighting in the area and a safer environment for users of the Manhattan Greenway.
Community engagement
Involve the local community to ensure a self sufficient new part of New York and a strong community awareness.
Besides a more green design of Manhattan Greenway in the New Amsterdam Waterfront the involvement of the local community is a very important aspect. The local community will use the area to rest, relax, sport or to get inspired. Besides these standard elements of a park the New Amsterdam Waterfront offers the local community to get actively involved in the maintenance and appearance of the area. The design has specific areas for vegetable gardens, organic foodpoints, community meeting spots, an environmental awareness pavilion, tree adoption gardens and eco education gardens.
