HOW CAN A MUSIC FESTIVAL ART INSTALLATION GET PEOPLE CLOSER TO EACH OTHER?
In the past years, social isolation and the increasing lack of connection have worsened our relationships of any kind. Also, mental health problems like loneliness, depression, and anxiety have become huge concerns, affecting almost a billion people worldwide. Today, more than ever, it's necessary to lighten the feeling of loneliness and allow people to experience what they feel and release themselves from that burden. Anyone needs a safe space to reconnect, whether alone or with someone else, and let go of their emotions. Communicating through music, art, or performance is one of the best ways to express our feelings.
IDEA
The Boom Festival is a biennial transformational, multidisciplinary, and environmentally conscious event that happens every two years in Idanha-a-Nova, Portugal. At every Boom event, there is a new theme that sets the tone for the whole festival. It is based on this theme that the organization supports several emerging artists with their performances, art exhibitions, or installations.
Radical Love was the theme chosen for the 2023 edition, from where we took inspiration for an art installation. Our proposal called The Net explored the expression of love towards oneself (ego), each other, and the Earth. These three stages are all interconnected and essential for creating a better world. When we love ourselves, we are more capable of caring for others and the world around us.
The art installation consists of three semi-closed areas that refer to the three types of love. Rope nets create a sense of unity, and symbolize the interdependence of people and the idea that we are all connected in some way. The strength and durability of the material are a metaphor for the resilience of interpersonal relations. It reminds us of the importance of empathy, trust, support, and care in maintaining healthy relationships. The structure curves downwards, creating a sense of movement and fluidity, which symbolizes the idea that love is not static but is always evolving and growing.
HOLISTIC APPROACH
Love towards the Earth means treating it with respect, protecting it for future generations, and working to create a sustainable world. We want to express it through the choice of conscious materials and low-tech solutions for our design.
The structure of the top and bottom rings and pillars can be made either from reclaimed wood or recycled steel, depending on the availability of local resources. Reclaimed wood may be sourced from old buildings, bridges, and other structures that have been dismantled or demolished. It has a unique character and is often more durable than new wood, as it has already been seasoned over time. Recycling steel uses significantly less energy than producing new steel from raw materials. This results in a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants, and allows the structure to last over time.
For producing the rope net, we opt for using readily available natural fibers such as hemp, jute, cotton, flax, or sisal. They can be twisted and braided to make strong and durable forms. Optionally, we also consider using recycled materials such as old clothing, bags, and other textiles, which can be cut into strips. The top coat that provides shade will be made from dead stock fabric or recycled material.
In its essence, The Net installation for the Boom Festival 2023 is more than an art installation: it is a call to action, an invitation to embrace love in its versatile forms and to foster deeper connections with oneself, others, and our planet. Crafted with care at its core and symbolizing resilience, unity, and the dynamic nature of love, the installation serves as a safe and inspiring space for festival-goers to explore and express their emotions freely. As attendees navigate through the interconnected semi-closed areas, they will not only experience the transformative power of love but also engage with the urgent necessity of balance and community. This convergence of art, emotion, and ecology is what makes The Net installation a unique and invaluable addition to the Boom Festival, encapsulating the spirit of the event while echoing the larger global imperatives of connection and conservation.
With this installation, we aim to craft an experience that resonates, inspires, and echoes long after the festival's lights dim, embodying a beacon of love for all to carry forward.
