Mews 02 is a single residence set in Belsize Park, London. The owners, a musician, and his designer wife wanted the existing mechanics garage converted to a 4 level family home, with emphasis on the entertaining areas and the ability to create private compartment over for sleeping.
On first impression, as one passes through the entry gates, the sunken courtyard resembles a slate quarry with its charcoal blocks running externally and reaching internally to the rear of the residence. Immediately one senses the playful use of light and dark, black on white.
The seamless flooring flowing horizontally through each level and the contrasting charcoal construction blocks rising vertically. The spine wall forms the circulation hub and ama set out to isolate each floor using this device.
Externally the floors are connected only the void space. As in other properties ama plays a visual game by setting up a intriguing circulation route throughout the building.
