BEIJING, May 14, 2014 – INCLUDED, a nonprofit organization formerly known as Compassion for
Migrant Children, officially celebrated its first year operating under its new brand with a highly interactive outdoor exhibition in downtown Beijing’s Taikoo Li Sanlitun this week.
The public exhibition was housed in the organization’s signature architectural
contribution to urban landscapes – creatively designed shipping containers that can serve multiple
purposes for local communities. The iconic shipping container structures provide a key vehicle for
realizing the organization’s long standing commitment to support equality and integration for migrant communities in urban societies in China.
INCLUDED’s ultimate goal is to create a globally interconnected network of 100 community centers, currently 27 centers strong, in ten cities.
INCLUDED’S interactive multimedia exhibit entitled ‘The Migrant Journey’ combines experiential
graphic design and powerful narrative to illustrate migrants’ role and contribution in China’s development.
Visitors walking through the carefully designed shipping containers can explore different
perspectives on urbanization and migration, from the macroeconomic forces that drive the movement
of rural dwellers to cities to the personal decisions each migrant faces. The aim of the exhibition is to
increase peoples’ understanding and appreciation for migrants’ contributions and sacrifices, and spur
an increase in support for the integration of migrants into urban society. When we include migrants,
our cities are better for everyone.
“Migrant exclusion is a huge issue in cities all over China and all around the world,” noted Jonathan
Hursh, executive director and founder of INCLUDED. “We hope that through this exhibit and other
initiatives, urbanites will realize that migrants add enormous value to their communities. INCLUDED is
pioneering solutions for integrating migrants into urban communities here in China that are being
adopted in migrant slums all over the world. We see a world where one day, we’re all included.”
INCLUDED partnered with numerous organizations to make the exhibit a special one. Infinity Design
& Engineering provided funding support, COSCO donated the shipping containers, Taikoo Li Sanlitun
provided the top retail spot in Beijing to place the containers, frog collaborated on the design of
one of the containers and LANDZ used their expertise to build the exhibit. Ketchum donated their
services as the PR partner for the event and for INCLUDED on an ongoing basis.
