The Merlot Pods are seamless, unfinished pod spaces inspired by the circular tart native to Batam Island, Indonesia. The design embodies the playful and casual essence of slow living in Bali. Located in the heart of Canggu—a hub for surfers situated between the beach and the city—the Merlot Pods reflect the vibrant spirit of the area.
Originally designed as a checkpoint for pedestrians heading to the beach, the dessert shop has now become a stopover for pedestrians due to the improper use of the city's walkways. Despite its modest size compared to the larger Canggu area, the Merlot Pods allocate more than half of their space to public use. The ramp also functions as urban furniture, offering a resting spot for anyone on their way to the beach.
Inspired by traditional clay materials commonly used in local house roofs and walls, the Merlot color palette reflects local culture while incorporating contemporary design elements such as wave inspired roof. The unique unfurnished dining spaces provide a creative solution for compact areas. In these pods, the furniture merges with the structure, forming the floor, walls, and the space itself. Visitors become the focal point of the interior, complemented by curved glass openings that face the street and are shaded by bamboo. This thoughtful design minimizes artificial lighting, allowing natural sunlight to filter in, creating a poetic atmosphere that freezes time and invites visitors to embrace the surrounding culture.
While the space exudes subtle charm during the day, it transforms into a beacon after sunset. The curved design introduces a seamless and understated addition to the urban landscape, avoiding visual dominance and harmonizing with its surroundings. The Merlot Pods integrate seamlessly into Canggu’s vibrant community, becoming a vital part of the city's cultural and social fabric.
