In order to create the visual narrative for a script that serves 2
alternating worlds, we sought a primary metaphor that reflected the
clashing prejudices between the characters. Between the Rialto and
Belmont, we worked to discover a visual structure that linked the two
opposing forces. Rotten mooring posts defined the space, with gold-encrusted gondolas
moving up and down on them, like the weights of a scale or the beads of
an abacus. The gondolas, staged at a variety of heights, also flew
out-of-sight, as the slackened rigging and the caskets of Belmont
enclosed the space to create a prison-like environment for Portia.
